General faqs

Why is your clinic fragrance free?

We often treat patients who are chemically-sensitive and suffer from allergies or inflammatory conditions aggravated by fragrances (both "natural" and artificial). For the health of all, we ask that patients and visitors to the clinic refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, body sprays, lotions, and other fragrant make-up or personal care products.

We do not accept insurance, and most health insurance providers do not cover functional medicine treatments. However, certain services, procedures, and lab tests in functional medicine can be covered by your insurance, depending on your plan. And Health Savings Accounts often can be used for acupuncture and related therapies. Check with your insurance and/or HSA provider to see what is covered.
More
How many treatments will I need?

The frequency, duration, and modalities of your treatment will be determined by you and your practitioner. With acupuncture, some patients notice results after the first treatment. For more complex conditions or long-term chronic injuries or illness, treatment may take longer. For Functional Medicine patients, a series of follow-ups will be needed based on your goals and the findings from your intake appointment and laboratory results.

Acupuncture FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been practiced for more than 3,000 years as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, disposable needles into the skin, muscles, or other tissue of the patient's body. The points of insertion may be chosen to directly stimulate an injured area or selected for their ability to affect the bodies energy, referred to as qi.
Particularly when combined with other therapies, acupuncture can be a highly effective therapy for almost any ailment.
More
Does it hurt?

Most people feel very little or no pain when needles are inserted. Acupuncture needles are very thin, and patients often say they feel energized or relaxed after the treatment. Cupping and gua sha, and very rarely acupuncture, may cause temporary bruising that fades within three to ten days.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine work?

Traditional Chinese Medicine works on a principle of balancing the body's function through manipulating qi, which travels throughout the body along specific meridians. The flow of qi keeps the body balanced. However, if the flow of this energy becomes "blocked", like water getting trapped behind a dam, the blockage can cause pain, dysfunction, and illness. Acupuncture is used to release blocked qi in the body and stimulate the body’s natural healing response through various physiological systems.

Functional Medicine faqs

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a biology–based approach that identifies and addresses the root causes of disease to bring relief from an array of ailments, including chronic conditions, to achieve whole body health and support longevity.
More
What is unique about the functional medicine approach?

Functional Medicine practitioners get to the root cause of a symptom or disease by identifying systemic physiologic imbalances through an in-depth investigation of an individual’s environment and lifestyle. The imbalances in the body that often drive illness are:

Assimilation: digestion, absorption, microbiota/GI, respiration
Defense and repair: immune, inflammation, infection/microbiota
Energy: energy regulation, adrenal and mitochondrial function
Biotransformation and elimination: toxicity, detoxification
Transport: cardiovascular and lymphatic systems
Communication: endocrine, neurotransmitters, immune messengers
Structural integrity: subcellular membranes to musculoskeletal integrity

Once the predominant areas of imbalance are identified, Functional Medicine practitioners work collaboratively with the patient to investigate lifestyle and environmental factors that may be causing or exacerbating the issue and proscribe an adaptive course of treatment to lead the patient back to full health.
